Addressing one of the major reasons OLPC’s XO Laptop is being shunned by some countries—the lack of a Windows operating system—Microsoft is developing a version of Windows XP and Office that’s run directly off of a 2GB SD card. (They convinced OLPC to add an SD slot to the mobo for this very project.) It’ll be conducting “limited field trials” with OLPC next month, with a possible launch sometime after June. The catch?

It won’t be offered to anyone in the US or Canada, even quasi-philanthropists participating in the Get One, Give One program. But, we’re guessing the anti-copying measures won’t be particularly hardcore, meaning it’ll probably make its way to the internets not long after launch. Bootable Windows on an SD card would be pretty nice on our side of the world too, actually.

According to Dean Takahashi of the Mercury News, Microsoft is developing a new motherboard codenamed “Jasper.” The upgrade promises to shrink the ATI graphics chip to 65nm and reduce the size of the memory chips as well. If true, this could reduce build costs and the heat problems that have plagued the 360. Although Takahashi notes that Microsoft believes they already have the heat situation under control. The upgrade is expected in August of ‘08.

Windows Home Server might be one of those things that you didn’t know you needed until you experienced it (like TiVo).

Things that I would love about it :

1.  Storage : one terabyte of networked storage that I can use from any computer in my home.

2. Safety : automatic backup.  Every computer on my network could be automatically backed up. Schedule it using incremental and once the first backup is done everything else is pretty easy.

3. Remote access : I access my server from my network or from anywhere in the world using a Microsoft free URL mapped to my server.  I could remotely access and control any computer on the network .

4. Streaming media :  WHS becomes a true media server .

5. The platform : built on Windows Sever 2003 .  There’s also the SDK you could use to develop your very own server applications.
